Since October is Orthodontic Health Month, we wanted to highlight one of the common questions many patients have – do you need braces or Invisalign? Many patients prefer Invisalign because it’s quicker and more discreet. However, it’s not always the best option according to your smile needs.
Today, we’re highlighting why either one may be right for you and what you can expect during treatment.
Braces vs. Invisalign
Braces are the cornerstone of orthodontic treatment, and the reason is that it works. One of the reasons this may be the right option for you:
- You have more significant orthodontic problems. Severe alignment issues and crooked teeth are not often fixable with the Invisalign clear aligners.
- They stay in place. Part of the reason braces work so well is that they stay in place and are not easily removable. Patients who aren’t disciplined enough to wear Invisalign nearly all day, often prefer this method.
- You won’t lose them. With braces, there’s no chance you’ll lose them; however, there is that risk with Invisalign clear aligners.
However, for some patients, Invisalign is an ideal treatment option. We may recommend this if:
- You have only minor alignment problems. If you don’t have large gaps or severely crooked teeth, this may be a great fit for you.
- You prefer a discreet solution. Many adults prefer Invisalign because it allows them to feel more confident in a professional setting.
- You want a quicker solution. Braces tend to take a couple of years to complete treatment, but Invisalign can take only months to complete.
Benefits of Straight Teeth
Whichever one is right for you, there are many benefits of straight teeth that you’ll love experiencing:
- Your teeth are easier to clean. Once your treatment is done, you’ll find that straight teeth are far easier to clean than crooked teeth.
- Fewer places for bacteria to hide. Gapped or crooked teeth give plaque more areas to get into and cause harm.
- You’ll feel more confident. We love when patients feel good about how they look and that’s one of the biggest benefits of straight teeth.
